It is Inhambane day on 12 August here are some facts of this city

·         In the 11th century Persian and Arabian dhows traded pearls and Ambregis in Inhambane

·         Inhambane was well known for the cloth which was spun and woven by the local Tonga people

·         Inhambane also carries the dubious title of the first Mozambican port to export slaves. The town enriched itself in the 18th century with ivory and slaves.

·         On 12th of August 1956 Inhambane was elevated to status of a city

·         Inhambane has a population of 77 000 (census 2008)

·         Present mayor is Benedito Guimino of Frelimo party

·         Cathedral of our lady of conception was built in 17th century

·         Ornate mosque was built in 1840 and houses a 380 year old Koran

·         Inhambane city is the capital of Inhambane province

·         Vasco da Gama arrived in here in 1498, locals told him in the Bitonga to come out of the rain, Bela khu Nyumbani. The Portuguese incorrectly thought they were being told the name of the region, and so Inhambane got its present name.
